The History of PTSD

You may have heard of “Soldier’s Heart”, “Neurasthenia”, “Compensation Sickness”, “Railway Spine” “shell shock”, “Combat Exhaustion”. All of these names, they each refer to the same thing, “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” or “PTSD” as it is commonly known. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder has actually been around for thousands of years, but no one knew much about it until now.

PTSD in Modern Times

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a serious disorder that affects many soldiers. More and more commonly, soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan are having to deal with it.  PTSD is an anxiety disorder that can occur after you have been through a traumatic event.  After the event, you may feel scared, confused, or angry.  All people with PTSD have lived through a traumatic event that caused them to fear for their lives, see horrible things, or feel helpless. Strong emotions caused by the event create changes in the brain that may result in PTSD.

The topic of PTSD has been receiving a lot of attention lately so we wanted to see who is feeling the effects of it within the U.S. Military and provide more definition.  Hopefully, this graphic below helps.  Please share it and pass it along.
